The purpose of this preconference is to introduce the practice of TIC as it applies to drug exposed infants and their mothers, and how to integrate TIC into the setting or organization. Trauma informed care (TIC) model provided a therapeutic environment for the infant with neonatal abstinence syndrome, mother and family in a variety of settings such as hospitals, clinics, and outpatient settings.
Part of trauma informed care is giving the parent the tools they need in the form of parent education from the beginning is critical to building trust and collaboration. I will be sharing some approaches used in a British Medical Center, they educate mothers about Eat Sleep Console while in the hospital, and it increased parent at the beside from 50 to 80% during infant hospital stay. BMC began a dedicated primary care clinic in July 2017 for mothers with SUD and their infants, called---Supporting Our Families Through Addiction and Recovery (SOFAR). The specialized clinic also addressed the ongoing health problems of: infant dysregulation for as long as 3 months and problems with poor growth, feeding difficulties, and gastrointestinal reflux. These are all areas that the parent needs education and training on.
Continuing education credits will be calculated once all presentations are confirmed and the continuing education paperwork are reviewed.
