Respectful Maternity Care: An Approach to Harm Reduction for Mother-Infant Dyads Impacted by Opioid Use Disorder

Presenter: Dr. Kelly McGlothen-Bell, PhD, RN, IBCLC is an Assistant Professor at UT Health San Antonio, School of Nursing. As a nurse scientist, Dr. McGlothen-Bell is dedicated to understanding and resolving perinatal-infant health disparities in historically and systematically underrepresented groups, particularly among mother-infant dyads impacted by mental health and substance use disorders. Her program of science focuses on studying the impact of prenatal exposures on parent-infant interaction, human milk and lactation, and neurobehavioral and nutritional outcomes in high-risk infants. Dr. McGlothen-Bell has published numerous peer-reviewed articles related to infant feeding and stigma for mother-infant dyads affected by opioid use disorders. She has also presented her work at conferences nationally and internationally. Most recently, Dr. McGlothen-Bell was selected as a 2019-2021 Academy Jonas Nurse Policy Scholar. Her work is dedicated to the protection and promotion of respectful maternity and neonatal care and birth and breastfeeding equity for all mothers and infants through advocacy, education, practice, and research.
